Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on February 2, 1977 in
Barranquilla, Atlántico, Colombia. Her name means "grateful" or "thankful" in
Arabic.In 2001, her album Laundry Service
sold over 15 million copies world wide.
A two time Grammy
winner, Shakira is also a seven time Latin Grammy winner and a Golden Globe
nominee. She is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold
more than 50 million albums worldwide.
Shakira is the only South American
artist to reach number one on the Billboard Top 100.
