"When a photograph isn't enough"

Heart Strings #1

A little boy was walking down a dirt road when he came to a farm. A sign on the fence post said "Puppies For Sale".

The little boy got excited as he neared the barn to check out the puppies. He had always wanted a puppy.

Just then, the owner of the farm came out of the barn. The little boy said, "Hey mister, you got puppies for sale?"

The man replied, "Sure do, son."

He led the little boy into the barn where the puppies were. The man whistled and the little boy was over joyed to see four yellow lab puppies rolling over each other to get to him.

The little boy asked,"How much do you want for one, Mister?"

The owner replied, "Well, son, these are pure bred puppies. They are very expensive."

"Well, I have 75 cents", the little boy said.

"I'm afraid that's not nearly enough", the owner told him.

Just then, from behind an old bale of hay, another lab puppy, noticeably smaller than the others, showed himself. This was a black lab puppy and he was limping badly.

"How much for that one?" The little boy asked.

"Oh, you don't want that one", the man told the little boy. "He's the runt of the litter. He'll never amount to anything".

With that the little boy pulled up the pant legs of his jeans to reveal two cumbersome braces.

"That's what they said about me, too", he told the man. "How much for the black one?"

The man, looking into the little boy's big eyes, said, "I can let this one go for 75 cents".

The boy was thrilled! He picked up the little black lab pup and said, "I'm gonna name you Chance".

"Why Chance?" The man asked.

"Because that's all he needs, Mister, is a chance", the boy answered.

The man watched with a tear in his eye, as the little boy carried Chance out of the barn and down the dirt road.
