We all have times when we have to get a gift for that someone who
"has everything". We have no idea what to get them. If you can draw, you pretty
much have an unlimited supply of gifts.
Really, think about all the times throughout the year that you buy gifts.
Christmas of course, birthdays, Mother's Day, Father's Day...etc.
Then add in
those special celebrations like graduations, retirements...
A few years ago, my wife and I were invited to a birthday party for my Dad's
best friend, Donny. Donny was turning 70 and we wanted to get him something
special. I looked through some of my Dad's hunting albumns and found a nice
photo of Donny and his oldest son together. So I drew a pencil portrait of the
two of them and had it framed.
The day of the party, Donny was opening all the gifts people gave him. One was
a coffee mug telling him how old he was. Another was a t shirt that said he was
"over the hill". He got a few gift certificates to restaurants. Then he
un-wrapped my portrait of him and his son. It brought tears to his eyes. He
told me later how much it meant to him and that he would cherish it forever.
Maybe you know someone who would love a pencil portrait of a long lost pet. Or
a pet they still have. That special old car. Them and their spouse together.
Their house. Their kids or grand children. With a little imagination, the
possibilities are almost endless.
My sister's all time favorite movie star is
Clark Gable. So I did a drawing for her of her and Clark Gable together. She
loved it!
You'll find that as you give your portraits as gifts, that other people at the
party or celebration will ask you to draw for them, too.
My brother-in-law is
a history buff. One of his heroes is Teddy Roosevelt. I gave him a portrait of
Roosevelt for Christmas. He framed it and hung it in his home.
So, the next time you're "stuck" for that perfect gift for the person that
seems to have at least one of everything, draw a pencil portrait for them. It
will be a one of a kind gift that they will love!
